Daniel Schoester

Founder and rates editor, giccalculator.ca

I check every rate on this site by hand, once a month, against each institution's own posted page. Nobody pays me to list them, and no institution can buy a higher position.

Why trust me on GIC rates

01
Honours BBA (Finance) in Finance, Wilfrid Laurier UniversityFixed income and the mechanics of guaranteed products were the core of the degree, not an adjacent interest.
02
I have built rate tables beforeBefore this site I wrote for WOWA, a Canadian rate-comparison publisher. That is where I learned how these tables are assembled, and why a posted rate and a promotional rate are not the same number.
03
Finance bylines across 8 publishersForbes Advisor, The Average Joe, Hardbacon and others have published my work. Each has an editorial standard and a fact-checking process my copy had to clear.
04
I do the verification myselfNo contractor, no scraper, no syndicated feed. One person opening 15 institutions' rate pages each month, which is why the source is linked on every row.

Plus appearances in Yahoo Finance and MSN through syndication. Those are appearances rather than bylines, which is a weaker claim and worth stating as one.

What I am not

I am not a licensed financial advisor, and nothing on this site is personal financial advice. I hold no CFP or CFA designation.

What I do is read every issuer's posted rates carefully, show my sources, and explain the mechanics clearly enough that you can decide for yourself. For advice specific to your situation, speak to a licensed advisor.

How the rate table is maintained

The method matters more than the credential. Here is what happens each month.

01
Rates are read from each institution's own posted rate page, never from another comparison site and never from a press release.
02
The standard posted rate for a non-registered, non-redeemable GIC compounding annually, at the stated minimum. An issuer that compounds more often is published at its annual equivalent; one that publishes no basis at all is marked as such rather than assumed. Promotional rates are noted separately rather than used to top the table.
03
A full sweep of all 15 issuers each month, by hand.
04
The previous month's table is archived rather than overwritten, which is how the rate history accumulates.
